Oddest Moments at the NYC Windjammer Booth

I remember three particularly odd occurrences

3. A family of eight or so walking by and grabbing eight or ten DVD's.

2. Some guy introduced himself as an "inventor" and proceeded to give a ten minute demonstration of his 21st century billfold.
(available for 1$ ea. minimum 5000)

1. The very nice staff at the Hooters Casino Booth next door honestly did not know where Maine is located. Or is that a normal occurrence?

At the New York Times Travel Show

Fun was had by most at the NYT show last weekend. This photo was taken Sunday.

Brenda Walker( Isaac H. Evans) and Cathie Dorr (Nathaniel Bowditch) greeted people at the Maine Windjammer Association booth.

Captains Foss, Barnes and Dorr were there for long stretches on Saturday.

PR rep. Meg Maiden was there from start to finish. The biggest challenge seemed to be explaining the differences between the Maine fleet and the "Barefoot" vessels down south.

There were some unusual moments to report, but I'll save those until tomorrow.

Jeff's Unofficial Role Playing Gamer Cruise

Things look set for my first foray into sailing role playing. I will host gaming sessions for willing participants on the Schooner Timberwind during "Gam" week (June 18-23.) These will be real life, face to face to face, un-electronic old style D&D adventures.

Likely players so far include Dawn, Will and Emily Tassi. Dawn and I are close in age and played the game in the late 70's into the 80's. I will use the actual paper books and real dice. These things go well with Timberwind's cozy galley and the possibility of playing by lamplight.

I will make the game suitable for younger players and adults as well.

Timberwind sails from Rockport Maine. This voyage is one of five 6 day sailings this summer. Boarding is on the evening of Sunday, June 17. We return on the morning of Saturday, June 23. I'll have updates on my game plans over time.

Look at the Pinky

Photo from Summertime Website

One of my favorite boat designs is the "Pinky," a 17th century European design adapted to schooner rig in New England. These salty looking vessels were double ended with a sharply pointed and upturned (pinked) stern. They are famous for their seakeeping ability as fishing boats.

Penobscot Bay has a locally built windjamming schooner called "Summertime" (above) that is based on the "Pinky" vessels. Her homeport is Brooklin but she is often in other ports including Rockland. Summertime does both day sails and longer cruises. She is a favorite sight to see for those in her cruising grounds.
